Learning + Play

Transformation of the outdoor environment at a specialist school, conceived as a journey of discovery through the landscapes of Suffolk.

Developed closely with pupils and staff, the Academy Trust and charity GeeWizz, the landscape brings experiences that can be difficult for some children to access into their everyday school environment. Woodland, growing, water and sensory play sit alongside mounds, tunnels, a bridge, beach-inspired play and a new MUGA, creating different opportunities for movement, exploration and discovery.

Existing structures and materials were reused wherever possible, while local businesses and volunteers contributed skills, materials and time — a collaborative approach that allowed the available funding to achieve considerably more.

Scope

Landscape strategy · Inclusive play design · Sensory landscape design · Planting design · Bespoke play design · Stakeholder collaboration · Supplier + contractor coordination · Project delivery

Project context

The project formed part of the Ed Sheeran Made in Suffolk Legacy project, with funds raised through the GeeWizz charity auction. Developed collaboratively with the school, Ormiston Academies Trust, GeeWizz, specialist suppliers and the local business community, the project brought together design, fundraising, donated expertise and local support to deliver an ambitious new landscape for the school.
