Private Gardens
Transformation of an overgrown rural garden for a family with young children, creating a landscape in which planting, water, play and movement are woven together.
Following an extension to the house, the wider garden was reorganised as a series of connected spaces and journeys. Two existing ponds were retained and enhanced, with a new bridge and jetty bringing them into everyday use and creating places to pause, cross and explore. Excavated material from the building works was reused within the landscape to form a substantial planted mound, avoiding unnecessary removal from site while creating the setting for a bespoke playhouse.
The planting introduces colour, movement and seasonal change within the rural setting, while paths and changes in level encourage exploration through the garden. The children's play landscape was developed as part of the garden rather than as a separate play area, working with a specialist maker to integrate the playhouse into the landform.
The project was developed closely with the client from initial zoning and landscape design through planting plans, material selection, plant sourcing and setting out on site.
